MFJO began life in Birmingham 2006 as a group of young musicians that had a shared love of the long tradition of big band music from Glenn Miller, via Count Basie to Thad Jones and beyond. They have appeared in numerous venues across the UK, notable gigs including a performance in support of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 2012 and a collaborative project with New York musicians Andrew D’Angelo and Dan Weiss in 2013.

The band has evolved along with Mike’s interest in large ensemble composition so now the repertoire comprises entirely original material. The 12-piece line-up is slightly reduced from the traditional ’16 men swinging’ and makes for a more nimble formation that preserves the power of a full band.

Mike’s large ensemble music is indebted to the classic big bands but also incorporates his interest in flexibility of form and freer forms of improvisation. His current works explore the thresholds between written and improvised music, an area that forms the basis of his PhD research.
